Don’t believe the 3 myths put about by double-glazing salesmen:

Myth #1.  New building regulations require double-glazing

THEY DON’T – Any window with its wood frames or boxes for sash chords still in tact can be refurbished with traditional elegant single glazing.  Single-glazed sash windows can be restored at far lower cost than double-glazing, even if they have been transformed at some point into louvred or fixed glass windows.

Myth #2.  Double-glazing will keep out noise

Draught proofing of single glazing is just about as good as double-glazing for noise reduction.  Secondary glazing is much better at keeping noise out, as there needs to be a large gap between panes of glass to create a barrier to noise.  Also much noise comes through your roof anyway.

Myth #3.  Double-glazing is “zero-maintenance”

THIS IS UNTRUE.  Dirt is attracted to plastic PVC windows and, unless they are washed every few months, the dirt will become ingrained in the plastic.  The PVC windows will need repainting with special expensive PVC paint.  Wood windows do need maintenance, but sanding and painting every 5-7 years is cheap and will keep your windows looking beautiful.  It’s well worth it.  Local tradesmen can be found to do a cost effective and environmentally sound job.
