Case Study in the vandalism of a beautiful building

Millions of homeowners have already been misled into destroying the windows of their properties, but the skills of clever double-glazing salesmen don’t stop there.  They are also winning for themselves a large quantity of our tax money.

At a school in west London a few years ago £ 200,000 of taxpayers’ money was spent removing elegant and beautiful 100 year-old sash windows from a school.  The windows were made of the best quality pine from virgin forests – wood that was properly seasoned and could have lasted for ever.  Repairs and repainting would have cost a few thousand pounds.

But a huge grant of money was made available by Tony Blair’s government, supposedly to benefit schools.  Instead a large capital grant went straight into the pockets of the double-glazing people.  Now the school has modern windows that can’t be opened properly and allow no circulation of air.  In hot weather, the children overheat, despite the purchase of energy-hungry fans to try to cool everyone down.

The pictures show the replacement operation at the school half completed.  The old reddish coloured pine timber is chopped up and left smashed on the ground.  The shiny new plastic units, looking totally out of keeping with the 100 year old building, are going in.

The new windows will last only 20 years and require more taxpayers money for further replacements. This was a scandal, but not enough local people opposed the double-glazing and a beautiful building was ruined for ever.
